Rogers-O'Brien Construction Named Winner In The Mid-Sized Business Category Of Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards
- Rogers-O'Brien Construction (RO) has been honored in the Mid-Sized Business category of Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards for its innovative adoption of VigiLife SafeGuard technology, revolutionizing worker safety practices. Amidst rising concerns over heat-related fatalities, with Texas experiencing approximately 300 deaths in 2022 alone, RO's initiative stands out as a beacon of progress.
Even before this breakthrough, RO had taken proactive measures by instituting annual heat safety training for its 98 craft construction workers, who endure long hours under the blazing Texas sun. However, Ross Daly, Director of Safety at Rogers-O'Brien Construction, acknowledges the limitations of traditional approaches. Thus, aiming to outshine the sun itself, RO embraced VigiLife SafeGuard, a wearable sensor designed to enhance worker safety through real-time monitoring and alerts. In the summer of 2023, Rogers-O'Brien became the first general contractor to deploy SafeGuard technology across its workforce.
The device, seamlessly integrated with a smartwatch, functions akin to a fitness app, meticulously tracking biometrics such as heart rate and core body temperature. It alerts workers to moderate their exertion levels and, at critical thresholds, notifies the on-site safety manager to relocate affected workers to a cooled environment for recovery. This proactive approach aims to prevent heat-related issues from escalating into emergencies.
Heat-related illnesses not only compromise worker health but also inflate project costs due to lost productivity, medical expenses, and accident investigations. Daly emphasizes that safety remains paramount, stating, "If it prevents even one heat-related illness, the system pays for itself."
Todd Wynne, Chief Innovation Officer at Rogers-O'Brien, asserts, "We are ushering in a new era of worker safety." He lauds SafeGuard technology for its ability to preempt heat-related risks and protect employees like never before. As the first general contractor to embrace this transformative solution, RO is setting a precedent for the industry and reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the well-being of its workforce.
